„Cooperation Programme Sustainable Rural Development (PDRS) in Peru“

SHORT DESCRIPTION

The ‘Programa Desarollo Rural Sostenible‘ (PDRS), which focuses on rural regions of Peru (Piura, Cajamarca and San Martin), is concerned with the protection and sustainable use of natural resources. The objective of the project is to improve the livelihoods of the poor rural population through the sustainable use of natural resources (eg. through sustainable forms of tourism). The programme comprises of different components:
    (1) Disaster risk management in rural areas
    (2) Sustainable value adding from natural resources: production, marketing and export
    (3) Resource protection: Management of protected areas, buffer zones and catchment areas

The project aims to connect the protection of natural resources with their sustainable use, by strengthening the institutional capacities of local organisations and public institutions and integrate (new) disaster risk prevention instruments und regulations into strategic development and land use planning.

AGEG consultants, in collaboration with ECO, were responsible for the following measures:

• Environmental communication and education (including the implementation of international conventions)
• Advice for protected areas management including
  - developing and implementing management instruments
  - capacity-building for management institutions
  - capacity-building and on-the-job training for park management staff
• Development of mechanisms for environmental services compensation (incl. Payments for Environmental Services (PES) and conflict prevention)
• Trade promotion and facilitation of market entry (including promotion of eco-tourism and natural products at fairs and the establishment of PPPs in these sectors)
• Mainstreaming and expansion of the most important products, processes and lessons learnt among colleagues, educational institutions, public institutions at national and sub national levels, and amongst the private sector.
